5. Trauma, Abuse & Violence

Recognizing Unhealthy and Abusive Patterns

Abuse does not always involve physical violence.

Harmful patterns can include Emotional Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Coercive Control, Gaslighting, Stalking, Financial Control, Threats, Isolation, Humiliation, Monitoring, Sexual Coercion, and Manipulation.

Gaslighting describes behavior intended to make another person distrust their perception, memory, or judgment. It is not itself a psychiatric diagnosis.

People may also display narcissistic traits or behaviors without having Narcissistic Personality Disorder. You do not need to diagnose another person in order to recognize that behavior is harmful.

Understanding how unhealthy behavior developed does not excuse harm. People deserve safety and appropriate accountability, while people engaging in unhealthy patterns may also be capable of learning healthier behaviors when they are willing to take responsibility and change.

8. Relationships, Pregnancy & Family Life

Understanding an Unhealthy Relationship

People often search for terms such as "narcissistic abuse," "gaslighting," "codependency," "emotional abuse," or "toxic relationship" when trying to understand painful relationship patterns.

Instead of trying to diagnose another person, consider the behavior itself.

Do you routinely feel frightened, controlled, humiliated, isolated, blamed, manipulated, monitored, sexually pressured, financially controlled, or encouraged to distrust your own judgment?

Those patterns deserve attention regardless of the label.

9. Children, Teens, Schools & Bullying

Understanding Bullying

Bullying is not the same as ordinary peer conflict.

Conflict can occur between people with relatively equal power who disagree or hurt one another. Bullying involves harmful behavior combined with a power imbalance and is typically repeated—or has the potential to be repeated.

Effective responses should protect the young person experiencing harm, interrupt harmful behavior, strengthen supportive relationships, establish appropriate accountability, increase protective factors, reduce risk factors, and help young people develop healthier social and emotional skills.

A child who engages in bullying behavior should be appropriately accountable without being permanently defined by that behavior.
