Heroes and Sheroes
The teachers, authors, and friends who helped me heal, and who still light my way.
Heal Yourself. Heal Your World.
Meet My Heroes and Sheroes
Meet the teachers, authors, and friends who carried me through my hardest seasons and still light my way today. Every name on this page earned its place the same way: their books, programs, and practices showed up in my life exactly when I needed them, and I still use what they taught me. I share them with you, my fellow Seekers, in the hope that one of them shows up for you, too.
Why I Share My Influences
My passion is helping people through events and circumstances that feel overwhelming. Why? Because I've been there myself. Many times, in fact!
My healing has unfolded in phases, which I call Chapters in my work. In each Chapter, I picked up new tools, put them to use, landed somewhere better, and cruised along… for a while, anyway.
Then tragedy hit with full force. I was knocked so far from my center that I honestly couldn't see a way out, or a way up. I was in a dark, dark hole. Thankfully, a voice inside me spoke up: "You have to find your way out. Your kids and grands are watching! Don't let your legacy be that grief and PTSD swallowed you whole."
Read more of my story
Geez! How was I supposed to do that? I couldn't change what had happened. The only thing I could think to do was learn new tools. "At least I'll go down trying," I told myself. Uh, boy. I can really tell myself some doozies!
Here's what I discovered: learning works for me. The more I learn, the more I choose positive growth. And the more positive growth I experience, the more I heal.
Today, I look back on my life in awe, grateful for all of it, the unbelievable highs and the bottom-of-the-pit lows. Those lows confirmed what I believe deep in my heart: we are here to help one another. What I learned along the way can help light someone else's path to their highest self.
That's why I share my Heroes and Sheroes with you. They taught me the survival tools I've shaped into the skills I use every day, in a life that now overflows with abundance. In each entry, I'll tell you what mattered most to me and how I use it today.
May something here light up your own Hero's Journey. Peace, love, joy, compassion, gratitude, hope, and curiosity to each of you, my fellow Seekers!
My Guiding Lights
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is my shero, and her book Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life has been nothing short of transformative for me. When I first read it, something clicked that years of other work hadn't quite reached. She gave me the language and the framework to finally understand why I struggled with PTSD and the repetitive thought loops that kept pulling me backward.

Her work helped me see clearly why I kept manifesting exactly what I didn't want instead of what I did, and it taught me how to recognize and work with my own inner "characters" (which I now call my TEAM players) every single day. That understanding became a seed that eventually grew into my own work.
Her insights have been a guiding light in my life, empowering me to take real ownership of my thoughts and emotions and, in doing so, manifest a far more positive and fulfilling life for myself.
I listened to Dr. Bolte Taylor narrate her own audiobook, and I could feel her passion and her humor coming through with every chapter, as if she were sitting right across from me sharing her tools directly. Her voice made the material land even deeper. I've since purchased more than 50 copies of her book, along with countless audiobooks, to give as gifts to people I love and to donate to organizations doing meaningful work, including our local detention center. If her words could change my life this profoundly, I want as many people as possible to have the chance to feel that too.
The TEAM model is my own interpretation of her work, and any errors are mine alone.
Mike Dooley
Mike Dooley is one of my biggest heroes, and his work has shaped both my personal life and my professional path in ways I'm endlessly grateful for. Since early 2010, I've started my mornings with his "Notes from the Universe," daily doses of inspiration and encouragement that always shift my perspective and remind me how much power my thoughts and beliefs hold in shaping my reality.

His books Infinite Possibilities and Playing the Matrix have kept me positive, motivated, and laser-focused on creating the life I actually want. His methods worked for me, full stop.
I loved his work so much that I trained as a facilitator of both his Infinite Possibilities and Playing the Matrix programs, and sharing his messages with others brings me joy every time. Life really is great when you're an Ippie! Curious what that means? Head to tut.com and find out for yourself. You might just become one too.

Foundational Teachers
The Ortners: Nick, Jessica, and Alex
I'm a huge fan of the entire Ortner family, who founded The Tapping Solution back in 2007. Nick Ortner, now CEO of the company, has been a particularly influential guide in my own journey. I've attended many Tapping World Summits over the years and purchased the recordings to revisit whenever I need a refresher.
My first summit was in April 2019, and that same year I bought The Tapping Solution app. By 2021, I'd become a full-fledged Tapping Insider. One of Nick Ortner's emails also introduced me to Tony Robbins and Dean Graziosi's Project Next.
I turn to The Tapping Solution app anytime I want to refresh my own tapping routine. With so many programs and categories to choose from, it's been an incredibly valuable tool for me personally. Tapping has become a family practice, too. Many of my family members tap, and I've taught several of my grandchildren how to tap away their anxiety, fear, frustration, and pain. Watching them use it lights me up every time. Tapping even shows up in The Adventures of Goldie, my upcoming children's series that I am co-creating with my 11-year-old granddaughter. Goldie uses tapping herself, and in Episode 2, "Bri and the Snake," she tells young viewers all about it and teaches them how to tap.
I've purchased and gifted more titles from this family than I can count: Manifesting Your Greatest Self, The Tapping Solution, My Magic Breath: Finding Calm Through Mindful Breathing, The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living, and The Big Book of Hugs (co-authored by Nick Ortner), along with Jessica Ortner's The Tapping Solution to Create Lasting Change and Alex Ortner's The Tapping Solution Planner and Journal. I've lost count of how many of those planners and journals I've worn out! These siblings absolutely belong on my Heroes and Sheroes list, and I'm grateful for every one of them.
Dawson Church, PhD
Dawson Church is one of my heroes, and his work has shaped my life in more ways than I can count. His books Bliss Brain and Mind to Matter were pivotal in setting me on the path to the life I'm living today, and I wholeheartedly recommend both of them, along with his Ecomeditation and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practices, to anyone ready for a shift.

One concept of his that has stayed with me is the "Benevolent Non-Local Universe," which resonated so deeply that I adopted it, abbreviated as BNLU, and wove it into my own work.
Here's a story that still gives me chills: during my "Dark Night of the Soul" in 2019, I stumbled across a copy of his EFT manual buried in my computer files. I had saved it back in 2010 and never opened it until that exact moment, nine years later, when I needed it most.
Stephen Covey
I read Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People shortly after it was published, and it inspired me to pick up a 7 Habits planner along with several of his other motivational tools. These resources reinforced everything I was learning in the book and arrived at exactly the moment I needed practical guidance to navigate a high-stress season of my life.

Stephen Covey was truly a hero to me, and I'm deeply grateful I discovered his work. It brought real order to my life when I needed it most. His son, Sean Covey, later carried the torch forward, writing The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, a book I've used in my classes for several decades now.
Sean Covey
Sean Covey, one of Stephen Covey's sons, built beautifully on his father's legacy, writing The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. My late husband, Fred, and I taught The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens together in the years before he passed, and I still use it in many of my contracted classes today.

Sean Covey has a real gift for illustrating his points with stories, some drawn from his own teenage years and others from teens who shared how they used the 7 Habits skills to work through their own obstacles. At the end of each chapter, he includes what he calls "baby steps," engaging exercises that give readers layered opportunities to practice the tools he's teaching, not just read about them.
I also bought The 7 Habits of Happy Kids for my grandchildren, and they absolutely loved the stories and the skills they picked up. In years past, I brought that same book into my contract work with K–3rd graders, and it was a huge hit!
More Heroes and Sheroes Who Light My Way
Dr. Joe Dispenza
I first encountered Dr. Joe Dispenza's work through one of the documentaries that shaped my early spiritual education, either The Secret or What the Bleep Do We Know? I honestly can't remember which one got there first!
Either way, his ideas stuck with me immediately: the idea that we could rewire our own brains through intention and practice felt like permission I didn't know I needed.
Since then, I've gone deep into his books Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, You Are the Placebo, and Becoming Supernatural, and his work now shows up directly in my own teaching. His research on mentally rehearsing a desired future, especially when paired with real emotion, is foundational to the Creative Visualization practice I teach in my own Quest curriculum. Dr. Dispenza has given me both the science and the permission to trust that my imagination, used with intention, is one of the most powerful tools I have for building the life I want.
Jim Kwik
During the pandemic, audiobooks became one of my go-to tools for keeping my mind focused on positive growth, and I truly loved Jim Kwik's Limitless. He's a captivating speaker, and his personal story is fascinating in its own right.

Two of his concepts stuck with me in a big way. The first was choosing "harmony" over "balance," which makes so much sense, because sometimes certain areas of life simply need more attention, and giving them that attention is part of living in harmony. Harmony is my goal now. Jim was also the first person I ever heard say "practice makes progress" instead of "practice makes perfect," and I still teach both of these concepts in my classes today!
Louise Hay
Louise Hay sits right at the top of my shero list, for so many reasons. I first became interested in her work when I learned about her ministry to AIDS patients in the mid-1980s, and the more I learned about her, the more fascinated I became with her philosophy and tools for understanding the mind-body connection as a catalyst for healing, all of which she laid out in You Can Heal Your Life.
In 1987, she took that influence even further by founding her own publishing company, her namesake Hay House, Inc.
As an avid journaler, writer, and curriculum creator myself, I regularly pull from one of Louise Hay's card decks for inspiration and writing prompts. I'm so grateful she recorded works like Self-Esteem Affirmations, 101 Power Thoughts, and Morning and Evening Meditations before she passed away in 2017. Her voice is peaceful, comforting, and healing, and it puts me in exactly the right headspace to receive her wisdom. I listen to her audiobooks on the Hay House Empower You app, which I recommend to my fellow Seekers wholeheartedly.
Wayne Dyer
One day while browsing in my favorite bookstore back in 2002, I came across Wayne Dyer's book 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace. A quick look at the contents was all it took. I bought it on the spot. Money was scarce for me at that time, but mental peace was even scarcer, and buying that book turned out to be exactly the right call.
I kept it on my nightstand for years, opening to a random page whenever I needed it and reading whatever passage I landed on, and I used the 10 Secrets as writing prompts for my daily journal too.
I still turn to Wayne Dyer's work whenever I need to recalibrate my thinking and refocus on my own role in life's turmoil. Many of his books are now available on audio, and one of the perks of my Hay House Empower You membership is being able to listen to his work whenever I want. It's perfect company while I travel or exercise.
Tony Robbins
In May 2021, I joined the Own Your Future Challenge with Tony Robbins and Dean Graziosi, and I'm continually impressed by Tony's dedication to lifelong learning. His curiosity and passion are inspiring. No wonder he's become such a renowned motivational guru.
I've gone through several of Tony's courses over the years and deeply appreciate his approachable, down-to-earth style. My membership in Tony and Dean's Mastermind Business Hub Program says it all: this is a man who has earned his place as one of my heroes.
Dean Graziosi
Dean Graziosi is Tony Robbins' partner in the Mastermind.com Program, of which I've been a member for several years now. I first learned about Tony and Dean's Project Next through an email from Nick Ortner. Funny how these paths all seem to weave together!

I deeply admire Dean's energy and his passion for using tools and skills to help others experience positive growth. I purchased several of his books and programs during the pandemic and have always appreciated his humor and approachable style. Watching his presentations is a treat. His big smile adds an extra layer of warmth to everything he teaches, and it's easy to see why he's earned a spot on this list.
Melody Beattie
I started reading Melody Beattie's books in the late 1980s and early '90s, right around the time I started attending Al-Anon, when a friend of mine recommended her work. Her books helped so much of the Al-Anon message finally click into place for me, and I used her insights and tools to see my own codependent patterns clearly, especially within my relationship with an alcoholic.

Over the years, I read Codependent No More, Beyond Codependency, and The Language of Letting Go, and I've loved her writing style the whole way through: compelling, readable, and refreshingly down-to-earth. Her books arrived in my life at exactly the right moment and were truly transformative. The skills I learned from them still shape my life today, which is why she'll always be one of my long-term sheroes.
M. Scott Peck
I read The Road Less Traveled soon after it was first published in the late 1970s, and it left a real mark on me. I revisited it in a book study during the early 1990s, and his work has stuck with me ever since. I still use his definitions of love, non-love (laziness), and anti-love (hate) in my own work today. Once that book study wrapped up, I went on to read the rest of Peck's books.

For years, I kept a copy of Meditations from the Road on hand, with its daily excerpts from the original, and when my elder daughter was in her twenties, I passed my copy along to her. She resonated with his ideas every bit as much as I did. It's one of those books that seems to find you exactly when you need it, generation after generation.
Julia Cameron
One of the tools I lean on for positive personal growth is group book studies covering a wide range of self-help subjects, and way back in the early 1990s, I took part in one built around Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way. That book has continued to positively influence my life ever since. One of her core tools, "The Morning Pages," is a journaling practice I still do to this day.
I've also carried forward other tools from The Artist's Way, along with lessons from another Cameron book we explored in that same study, The Vein of Gold: A Journey to Your Creative Heart. Both books are timeless resources for creatives who feel stuck or lost in their work, and I return to them again and again. In fact, on a flight in late August 2024, I found myself listening to The Vein of Gold once more, and I'm so grateful I did. I'm already dusting off tools I first picked up decades ago.
Kelly Sullivan Walden
I came across Kelly Sullivan Walden's card deck, The Hero's Journey Dream Oracle, back in 2021, and I still use it today for journal prompts in my daily morning journaling practice. Her work plays off of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, a framework I've adapted in my own writing as well, so her deck feels like a natural extension of work I already love.
The Hero's Journey Dream Oracle is fun to sit with, and the illustrations by Rassouli are absolutely stunning. I love that a deck built for dream work translates so naturally into morning journaling. It's proof that good tools are flexible ones.
Pam Grout
During my Dark Night of the Soul, I happened upon Pam Grout's audiobook, Thank and Grow Rich, and it turned out to be exactly what I needed to navigate some rough waters. She narrates it herself, and I found her both insightful and hilarious, a combination that made hard material easy to absorb.
The book is packed with helpful exercises and activities, and I've put several of her experiments to use from her books E-Squared and E-Cubed, including one I still bring into my own classes. The most profound tool I took from Thank and Grow Rich was learning to decide on the best possible outcome for a situation and then deliberately putting my thoughts and energy there. It works. I mean that. It really, truly works.
Marie Forleo
Marie Forleo is truly a force of nature! She's energetic, entertaining, and remarkably insightful when it comes to running an online business. I've gone through her premier program, B-School, multiple times, and every round I walk away with something new and exciting for my own business.

Her method for delivering course material is rock solid, packed with tools and exercises that are both thoughtful and fun. B-School has taught me so much and saved me countless hours by helping me sidestep mistakes I might otherwise have made. I'm grateful for her deep dedication to her students, which is exactly why she's one of my sheroes. That, and the fact that she's an absolutely fantastic dancer! Be sure to check out her YouTube channel, MarieTV. She's as wise as she is adorable.
My Positivity Partner
Edy Harrington
I've been privileged to call Edy Harrington one of my best friends for over 15 years. We met at church, and I felt an instant, deep connection with her. After suffering a devastating loss, Edy became a Seeker herself, searching for answers to her own hard questions, and her healing journey is nothing short of remarkable.
I'm a living testament to the power of the tools she teaches through her volunteer work. Edy is my shero because she is a true wise sage who guided me through my own "Dark Night of the Soul." The course she taught for decades, Attitudinal Healing, is based on Susan Trout's book To See Differently, and between that book, the class itself, and the way Edy brought the material to life, my own life was profoundly changed, with effects that still reverberate to this day.
You can read more about Edy's extraordinary journey in her memoir, Ordinary Woman, Extraordinary Life. She is, without question, my shero, and I'm proud to call her my Positivity Partner in this life.
